Challenging our established design: how the first Total War Saga was born
Laura is a core designer on Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia at Creative Assembly, with a focus on campaign mechanics and campaign AI design.
Before joining CA Laura did a BSc course in Computer Science and a MA in Digital Game Theory and Design. In both of these she aimed to link AI and games together – first by adding games to an AI project, then vice versa, and to this day she most enjoys projects combining the two. Now at CA she is a Campaign and Campaign AI designer. On Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia amongst other things she was responsible for designing the character traits, followers, technologies, building balancing, and campaign AI.
This talk is aimed at designers (and aspiring designers) from all backgrounds, as wherever you are it’s important to keep an open mind when you’re working on a new design. It is easier to hold on to what’s already been done than it is to think about what else could be done.
In this talk you will gain insight into the design process of Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, and the thought processes behind some of our decisions. We will be looking at our established designs in Total War, and how we have challenged and questioned ourselves to rethink the use of mechanics and the expectations of Total War games for our first Saga title.
