1. Multi-cloud hosting of dedicated servers and 2. Game server scaling as a service
1. Multi-cloud hosting of dedicated servers
While using “bare metal” has been the way to go for hosting game servers for many years, employing cloud computing for that purpose is gaining in popularity. The cloud’s possibility to quickly boot extra machines sounds like a solution for one of the biggest concerns related to the game servers: fluctuations of active player count. But the cloud is expensive. So why not use a hybrid solution, allowing you to keep dedicated servers, while also being able to scale out to multiple cloud operators?
2. Game server scaling as a service
As more and more games are being hosted in the cloud, cloud operators started to prepare services catered to gamedev needs. We don’t have to rely on bare virtual machines any more. We can use dedicated APIs, special scaling options, deployment strategies, and many other features. In my talk I will make a brief introduction into what the biggest cloud operators have prepared for game developers with regard to game server hosting.
More than 20 years of professional experience revolving around servers, web applications, and even the cloud. 3 years ago it appeared that all the experience might be actually useful in gamedev – joined CD Projekt RED to design architecture for online components of games. Created a blooming Poland-wide network of meetups, speaks at conferences, takes photos, collects games, consoles, old computers, and yes, even plays on them sometimes.
